| X-Ray Quiz Answer |
|
| |
| A) Swallowed a
snake |
| Incorrect:
This patient's spine looks curvy like a snake, but there
is no snake visible in the contents of the patient's abdomen or the
esophagus. |
| |
|
| B) Acute back
spasms |
| Incorrect:
Intense back spasms can change the alignment of the spine, but the
amount of change in this x-ray is too pronounced. This patient's
problem is not due to acute back spasms. |
| |
|
| C)
Osteoporosis |
| Incorrect:
Osteoporosis is a condition in which bones become
dangerously weakened due to a loss of bone mineral density. It can
increase the normal curve in a patient's mid-back (thoracic spine), but
it usually doesn't lead to lateral (sideways) deviations of the spine. |
| |
|
| D)
Parachute Accident |
| Incorrect:
Spinal trauma, such as that from a parachute accident,
could potentially lead to multiple spinal compression fractures or
worse. All of the vertebrae in this x-ray appear to be of normal
height. Therefore, it is unlikely that this patient's back pain
was from a recent parachute accident. |

| E)
Scoliosis |
Correct!
Congratulations if you made the correct diagnosis -
scoliosis.
What is Scoliosis?
Scoliosis is a "C" or "S"
shaped side-to-side curve of the spine (e.g. left to right to left).
It affects about 2% of our population. Some cases are mild and go
unnoticed. Unfortunately, others can be severe and require
surgery.
Chiropractors routinely
screen patients for scoliosis. Early detection is important for
proper management. Here are some signs you can watch for,
especially in growing children:
- uneven shoulder
height
- sleeve lengths appear
uneven
- prominent shoulder
blade(s)
- uneven hips/waist
- persistent back pain
- bad posture or
leaning to one side
If you would like to have
your children or yourself screened for scoliosis, call the office or ask
Dr. Nyman in person.
